Cigar Reviews

The Rocky Patel Premium Cigar Company, based in Naples Florida, is a manufacturer of cigars and the fruits of Rakesh “Rocky” Patel’s labour.  As well known Hollywood attorney, Patel was turned on to the smoking of cigars by his silver-screen clientele.  After selling his practice, Patel spent five years in Honduras working on and leaning about all levels of tobacco cultivation and cigar production.  The Rocky Patel Premium Cigar Company now produces critically acclaimed smokes at a more than competitive price.  The “Vintage” series in particular has been lauded by the Robb Report and by Cigar Aficionado, earning consistent marks in the top 90th percentile (the Vintage 1992 series itself earned a 92 from Cigar Aficionado).

The Vintage 1992 Robusto follows Patel’s vision of premium craftsmanship readily available to any smoker interested in a terrific medium-bodied smoke.  The cigar’s “robusto” vitola, or size and shape, is as functional as it is iconic.  While comparatively short in length, it is of a robust circumference, making it quite versatile.  Many a “robusto” have been seen hanging from the lips of Che Guevera, to whom “cigar smoking was not a luxury, but very much a part of the business of revolution, a spiritual complement to lessen the hardships of a life filled with difficulties and dangers”.  The cigar is box-pressed, has a gorgeous medium-body that carries everything one wants in a decadent, full-flavored smoke.  Its gorgeous wrapper, Ecuadorian Sumatra, along with blended, smooth smoking, 7 year aged  Dominican & Nicaraguan tobaccos, create a perfect balance, complex flavor, and an inviting aroma anyone can appreciate.  A medium-bodied smoke in every sense of the description, the Vintage 1992 series is delightfully filled with nutty aromas and hints of spice that play on the tongue fantastically.   The dark, rich 10-year-old Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper features elegance and piquancy that compliment the exquisitely balanced 8-year-old filler tobaccos. The result is a highly renowned, highly rated cigar with complexity befitting the most discerning palate.  That’s not to say that this incredible cigar’s qualities would be lost on the less discerning smoker.  Quite literally the “total package,” the Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Robusto is a terrific smoke to be recommended without hesitation.

Cigar Reviews

The process of finding the best cheap cigars can be a laborious task of guess and check. As varied as the information is on the internet, one would think that it wouldn’t be too hard to find some decent cigar reviews on a good cheap cigar. Unfortunately that isn’t the case, and your next best bet is to try as many different types of cigars as possible. The easiest solution to this problem is the cigar sampler.
This particular sampler features five different brands of cigars so that you can see for yourself what kinds of cigars you enjoy. The first cigar offered with this amazing deal is the Graycliff 1666 PGX (Toro). Graycliff was founded by Fidel Castro’s personal cigar roller, Avelino Lara – the man who also started the famous Cuban company, Cohiba.
The second cigar is the Padilla Obsidian Torpedo which features a more full flavor profile due to the use of a Nicaraguan Ligero wrapper and Corojo filler tobaccos.
The third cigar featured in this wonderful variety is the Cuba Libre Magnum. These cigars are deliciously smooth and are made right alongside with some other premium brands such as Rocky Patel and Gurkha.
The fourth cigar of this bunch, the 5 Vegas Gold Double Nickle, is one of our favorites due to it’s mild creamy/nutty flavors.
The final cigar of this sampler is the El Mejor Emerald Robusto and it follows suit with the Padilla Obsidian Torpedo because it also uses the Nicaraguan Ligero wrapper and Corojo tobaccos for filler. Between the two there is still a noticeable difference and you will be pleased by both of them.

Cigar Reviews

In 1831, Don José Gener y Batet came to Cuba from Spain at the age of thirteen to work on his uncle’s plantation in the west of the country, Vuelta Abajo; an area renowned for its superior tobacco.  Some twenty years later, he bought a factory in Havana and began making his own cigar line, La Escepción.  After using his factory’s profits to acquire one of the best tobacco farms in Vuelta Abajo in 1865, he registered a cigar line named for it: Hoyo de Monterrey.

Since its introduction in the 1970s, Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur has distinguished itself as a super-premium cigar at a very reasonable price.  Honduran in origin, these cigars still exemplify Cuban tradition and expertise despite today’s embargo on Cuban tobacco.  Blended Honduran tobaccos, whose ancestors were smuggled out of Cuba, are rolled, bound in a fine Connecticut wrapper and cedar-aged, resulting in a medium to full-bodied smoke so rich and robust you’d think you were sitting poolside in Castro’s presidential estate.  Generally, the darker wrappers, such as the the Connecticut maduro, add a touch of sweetness, while lighter wrappers add a hint of dryness to a cigar’s bouquet.  There is a 40/60 rule of thumb when thinking about a cigar’s sapor.  Forty percent of the taste comes from the wrapper, while the other sixty comes from the filler and binder.  Visually, the Excalibur is distinguishable from its Habana inspirations by the color of the Connecticut wrapper, which is a little lighter than those of Cuban providence.  Taking these factors into account, the smoker is left with a cigar stronger in flavour than the same cigar were it wrapped in a lighter wrapper.  All around, the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur is an extremely well-balanced cigar for both the amateur enthusiast and seasoned aficionado.
